Agents can now pass buyer consent choices at Shopify checkout

Shopify's Cart and Checkout MCP now support UCP buyer consent, so shoppers buying through an AI agent can opt in or out of email and SMS marketing as they would in a store's own checkout.

Shopify's Cart MCP and Checkout MCP now support the UCP buyer consent extension, starting with UCP version 2026-08-25. This is the part of the update that matters for merchants: a shopper buying through an AI agent can make the same privacy and marketing choices they would make in your store's checkout, such as opting in to email or SMS messages. Those choices then reach you with the cart, checkout, and order.

What changed

Your store now lists the consent extension in its public discovery profile. When an agent negotiates this extension on the newer UCP version, the cart and checkout responses include a consent section. It lists each consent purpose the store supports, the shopper's current state for it, a description, and links to your policies. The purposes cover analytics, preferences, sale or sharing of data, and marketing, with separate email and SMS options under marketing.

If the agent doesn't send any consent choices, Shopify applies your default settings for the shopper's country. If the country is unknown, consent defaults to opt-out.

Why it matters for your store

Consent is only useful if it is recorded correctly. Agent checkouts used to need custom logic to handle regional rules; now the store's own defaults and the shopper's explicit choices travel with the order. That makes it easier to meet consent and communication requirements without building a separate process for agent sales.

Some choices need a contact detail. For example, an SMS opt-in without a phone number cannot be completed. In that case the response carries a missing_consent_data warning, and the checkout stays open until the agent collects the missing detail from the shopper.

What to do this week

  • If you sell through an agent or platform that uses these MCP tools, ask its developer whether it has negotiated this extension at the 2026-08-25 version.
  • Check that your consent policies and the default settings for each country are current, since they will apply to agent checkouts that send no choices.
  • If you use an agent yourself, confirm that it shows the consent options to shoppers and records only choices the shopper actually made.

Nothing changes for stores that do not use agent checkouts or for integrations on earlier versions.
