Shopify now lets you add subscription products from subscription apps to draft orders. A draft order is an order you build yourself in the admin, usually for a customer who asked for something over the phone, by email or in person. Until now, subscription items were hard to include in that flow. Now you can set up a recurring purchase for a customer the same way you would any other order.
The change works through invoices. After you build the draft, you send the customer an invoice. The customer receives a link to a checkout with their order already filled in. They can review what they are buying and complete payment there.
Why it matters for your store
If you take orders outside your normal storefront, this saves time. You no longer need to rebuild a subscription by hand, send a separate payment request, or ask the customer to sign up on the website. Repeat customers who prefer to order through you can get the same recurring setup as everyone else.
If you do not sell subscriptions or do not take draft orders, you will not notice a difference day to day.
What to do this week
- Nothing yet, unless you already use a subscription app and create draft orders for customers.
- If you do, try one test draft with a subscription product, send the invoice to yourself, and check the checkout link and the price shown before you rely on it for a real customer.
- Read Shopify's help doc on draft orders for the full steps.
