Shopify has published a security notice for app developers. The message is that attacks on apps are rising across the ecosystem, and that AI is making it easier to find weaknesses in software. Shopify is asking every app developer to act on a list of steps this week.
The steps include scanning apps with a new security check, moving to access passes that expire quickly so a leaked pass does less damage, and protecting the developer accounts that control each app, such as two-step sign-in and removing access for people who no longer need it. Developers are also asked to review their logs for suspicious traffic.
What this means for your store
You do not need to change anything in your store today. The notice is aimed at the people who build and maintain apps. Its goal is to lower the chance that an app you have installed could be used to reach your store data. Shopify says it will share details and timelines before any stricter rule takes effect, so merchants should see changes announced ahead of time.
The notice also says apps will face higher App Store security requirements over time. If you rely on a particular app for orders, customers or pricing, it is worth keeping its listing and update notes in view.
What to do this week
- Nothing yet is required from you as a merchant.
- Review the apps installed in your store and remove any you no longer use, since each one is a possible entry point.
- If an app asks for permissions that seem unrelated to its job, ask its developer why before approving.
- If you ever suspect a problem with an app, contact the app developer and Shopify Support straight away.
